LOVE...Michelle Jank

I first fell in love with Michelle Jank when I was a teenager reading Australian Vogue. In 2000, a recent graduate, Jank made her debut at Australian Fashion Week. My memory is of beautiful pieces, which to me seem somehow harmonious and a little thrown together (see the blue dress, a piece from her debut). I wish I had kept all those Vogues now because it has been difficult to find photos of her early work. There were a number of white pieces I really loved, with crocheted doilies and distinctly Australian motifs. I wish I could show them to you now.

Since then, Jank has gone on to live in Paris and New York. I followed her career with interest as she created breath taking floral neckpieces and was regularly photographed by The Sartorialist. She showed again in 2008 with a collection featuring birds on elegant gowns, with accompanying bird neckpieces.

In her capacity as a Creative consultant in Fashion, Jank has collaborated with Australian jeweller Fairfax and Roberts and The Sydney Dance company. In an interview with The Vine she describes her style as "Over dressed, mostly" and cites Iris Apfel and Man Ray as influences. A woman after my own heart.

I admire her as a talented Australian who has demonstrated that her creativity is translatable across different countries, genres and industries. A uniquely beautiful individual, I have no doubt I'll continue to follow her career with interest.
